Norman is tax counsel to Koskie Minsky LLP. He advises pension and benefit funds, trusts, trade unions, individuals, corporations and non-profit organizations on income tax and GST issues. Norman Tobias received his Bachelor of Common Law degree from the University of Toronto in 1978 and his Bachelor of Civil Law degree from the University of Montreal in 1984. He is a member of both the Ontario and Quebec Bars. Until 1991, Mr. Tobias was a tax lawyer with a Montreal-based national law firm. Since 1991, with the exception of a three year interlude in the tax solutions practice of an international accounting firm, Norman Tobias has engaged in his own tax counsel practice in Toronto and Montreal, with an emphasis on the taxation of private wealth and succession planning. His practice also involves the taxation of pension, benefit and deferred income plans as well as benefit and compensation programs for employees, including executives. Mr. Tobias is a sessional lecturer in taxation in the Faculty of Law, Queen's University. He is also author of Taxation of Corporations, Partnerships and Trusts, now in its 3rd edition, a Thomson Carswell publication. This book is the leading stand-alone text dealing with intermediary taxation in Canada and is one which the Supreme Court of Canada has had occasion to cite. Norman Tobias is a Governor of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews and sits on the boards of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario, the Toronto Chapter of Canadian Friends of Hebrew University, One Family Fund (Canada) and Selwyn House School in Montreal of which he is an alumnus. He is also an adviser to the Executive Steering Committee of the Campaign Against Child Poverty and the primary recruiter alumnus in Canada for Amherst College in Massachusetts, which has been ranked consistently by U.S. News & World Report as the premier liberal arts college in the United States. Norman Tobias was the NDP candidate in the riding of St. Paul's in the Federal Election of 2004 and is a senior adviser to the New Democratic Party of Canada on matters of tax policy. |
