Partner Elizabeth Mitchell has been practising with Koskie Minsky's labour and employment law group since 1987. Elizabeth proudly represents trade union clients in all of their endeavours. She assists them in obtaining bargaining rights, filing complaints of unfair labour practices, particularly during organizing campaigns, negotiating and enforcing their collective agreements, and participating in their court litigation as necessary. She appears frequently before the Ontario Labour Relations Board, the Grievance Settlement Board, grievance arbitrators, and Ontario's courts. Elizabeth represents trade unions whose members work in construction, the exhibit and display industry, retail and tourism, manufacturing, and the broader public service, including teachers, and health care workers. Within our employment law group, Elizabeth represents employees. She advises employees who are experiencing difficulties in their employment relationship, negotiates appropriate severance packages where that relationship is ending, and conducts wrongful dismissal litigation. Elizabeth is trained in mediation and in facilitated negotiation, both techniques that she regularly employs for alternative dispute resolution. Prior to law school, Elizabeth worked for several years, primarily in the social services. She is a graduate of the University of Windsor Law School, class of 1984, articled with a large downtown firm, and received her call to the bar in 1986. Immediately after her call, Elizabeth spent one year as a Clerk to the judges of the Supreme Court of Ontario (as it was then called). Elizabeth has used her pre-law experiences to contribute as a Board member to community agencies and legal clinics. Elizabeth offers her clients the judgment, perspective, and understanding garnered from years of experience in many fields.
