RE-EMPLOYMENT ADVICE
Since October 1999, well over 3,000 former Eaton's employees have been assisted
through telephone counselling. This is in addition to the hundreds of people
who attended the many seminars and workshops sponsored with the assistance of
various Provinces and Human Resources Development Canada.
If you still require assistance with resume writing, job search skills, labour
market information, and other labour adjustment matters please call your
nearest Human Resources Development Canada office. Phone numbers are available
in the Government of Canada section of your local telephone book's "Blue
pages".
The following is an outline of some advice offered at the various seminars and
workshops which were held across Canada during the fall of 1999 and early 2000:
-
Finding employment takes time, effort and above all - patience. Be disciplined
and systematic in your approach. Experience shows that those who put their
undivided attention to the task are more likely to be successful - and sooner.
In short, treat your job search like a job itself.
-
It is important to have a clear idea of the type of employment you are seeking.
This will make it easier to focus your search and communicate your goals to a
prospective employer.
-
Undertake an inventory and assessment of your skills, interests and career
priorities. Match your strengths with the job market. Understand and be able to
demonstrate our specific skills and your transferable skills. When you have
decided what your ideal employment target is, employment in that field.
Your resume
Prepare an up-to date resume. Personalize your resume so that it is an accurate
reflection of your skills and strengths. Target your resume to the specific job
for which you are applying. If you are filling out an employment application
always ensure that your responses are complete, accurate and that your writing
is easy to read.
Your cover letter
A cover letter must always accompany your resume. The letter should be
addressed to a specific person and tailored to the job to which you are
applying. Ensure that it is concise and serves as an invitation to consider
your resume. Never address a cover letter to "Whom it may concern."
Do your research
It is said that 90% of jobs are not even advertised. If so, then how are they
filled? Often jobs are filled by word of mouth or through networking contacts.
Many companies rely on their business networks to recommend people. Let people
know that you are looking and what type of employment you are seeking.
Networking provides you with important information about job leads and
openings, often even before they are advertised.
Interviews
An interview helps you to distinguish yourself, especially if people skills are
important. Devote time to develop your interviewing skills. Answer questions
clearly and convey your skills and experience through relevant examples drawn
from your past experience. Attend all interviews even if you are not interested
or are unsuccessful, the practice is invaluable. This will improve your comfort
level and increase your chances of securing a job.
