Norman C. Tobias
Counsel
Norman C. Tobias is Tax Counsel to Koskie Minsky LLP. He is also engaged in the independent practice of tax law. In his "of counsel" capacity, Norman advises and represents pension and benefit funds, trusts, trade unions, executives, corporations and non-profit organizations. Independently, he advises and represents corporations and private wealth.
He received his LL.B. from the University of Toronto in 1978 and his LL.B. (civil) from the University of Montreal in 1984 and is a member of both the Law Society of Upper Canada and of the Barreau du Quebec.
Norman teaches corporate tax law sessionally in the Faculty of Law, Queen's University. He is also author of Taxation of Corporations, Partnerships and Trusts, in its 3rd edition, a Carswell publication. This book is the leading stand-alone text dealing with intermediary taxation in Canada and is one which the Supreme Court of Canada has had occasion to cite. Taxation of Corporations, Partnerships and Trusts is an authoritative work available to subscribers of Corporate Tax Centre on Taxnet Pro.
Norman is a Governor of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews and sits on the boards of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario, the Toronto Chapter of Canadian Friends of Hebrew University, and Selwyn House School in Montreal of which he is an alumnus. He is also a member of the Executive Steering Committee of the Campaign against Child Poverty and the primary recruiter alumnus in Canada for Amherst College in Massachusetts, an institution which has been ranked consistently by U.S. News & World Report as the premier liberal arts college in the United States.
He was the NDP candidate in the riding of St. Paul's in the Federal Election of 2004 and is a senior adviser to the New Democratic Party of Canada on matters of tax policy.
